This U.S. presidential election year was eminently winnable for the Republicans.

Indeed, if one follows the longer-than-six-decade pattern since the Eisenhower administration, with only one exception the Republican and Democratic parties have effectively alternated eight-year terms in power, making this the Republicans' turn.

Moreover, her email scandal has left the uninspiring and uncharismatic Hillary Clinton, the Democrats' presidential candidate, with dreadful assessments as to her honesty and trustworthiness. With a mainstream candidate such as Ohio Gov. John Kasich, it is reasonable to think the Republicans would be clearly ahead in the polls.
