Tories have much work to do before next election

According to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Canada-Europe trade agreement he signed in Brussels last week is "the biggest deal our country has ever made."

Even if that's true — even if, as he went on to proclaim, the agreement in principle, "is a historic win for Canada" — will it be enough to save his Conservative government?

If it were not so serious, it would be very funny. The Canada Revenue Agency, the guardian (presumed) of the integrity (oft vaunted) of the Canadian tax system, cuts a refund cheque for $381,737 and, without a second thought, sends it off to an old man in Montreal.

Politics is a cruel sport, perhaps the cruelest of all supposedly civilized pursuits. It raises its practitioners to giddy heights that many of them could scarcely dream of. It can dash them to the ground without warning and abandon them in the gutter of defeat and failed ambition, there to struggle to retrieve their dignity and rebuild their lives.
